Temporomandibular disorder (TMD) refers to a group of conditions involving the orofacial region divided into intrinsic disorders of Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) and those affecting the masticatory muscles. TMDs are the most common cause of non-dental pain in the maxillofacial region. The typical features include pain in TMJ, restriction of mandibular movement and TMJ clicking or popping sounds.

The TMJ clinics serve an important role in dental institutions by providing specialized care to patients experiencing dysfunction of the temporomandibular joint. Patients presents with jaw pain, clicking or difficulty in mouth opening. The TMJ Clinic in our instituition functions in the Department of Oral Medicine and Radiology. Patients with TMJ disorders are clinically evaluated based on Diagnostic Criteria for TMD by a Specialist in Oral Medicine and Radiology. The diagnosis is based on the symptoms, clinical examination and Radiological evaluation. An interdisciplinary approach to treatment involves the expertise of various specialists- Oral Physicians, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, Prosthodontists and Orthodontist. By considering various perspectives and expertise, these clinics develop customized treatment plan that address both the physical and emotional aspects of TMJ disorders. They play a vital role in improving the quality of life for individuals experiencing TMJ symptoms.
