Consistent Quality Enhancement Drive of the institution:
From its inception in 2002 as the first self- financing dental college in Kerala, quality enhancement is a hallmark of the institution. PMS College of Dental Science and Research started with a 40-seat intake capacity for BDS Degree course. Dental Council of India and Government of India recognized PMS College of Dental Science and Research in 2007. This was followed by ISO certification in 2008. The Post Graduation in three specialties, viz Conservative dentistry & Endodontics, Prosthodontics and Crown and Bridge and Periodontics, was initiated in 2010, with an intake capacity of three seats. From initial 40 BDS seats, PMS became the first dental college in the state to have an intake of 100 students for
undergraduate course in 2011. By 2011, PG courses started in all the eight specialties.

PMS College of Dental Science and Research was the first dental college in Kerala to obtain NAAC accreditation in 2014, thus commencing the journey of getting accredited and ranked from various national agencies.

Seat enhancement sanction for five seats was obtained from Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in 2017. Thus, PMS Dental College became the first institution among the dental colleges in Kerala to have an intake capacity of five in all the six dental specialties and three seats each for Oral Medicine and Radiology and Oral Maxillofacial Pathology and Microbiology by 2017.

To deliver quality clinical services, diagnosis and treatment to our patients is our prime motto.
Simultaneously to equip our students in advanced treatment strategies, we introduced higher end equipment and procedures such as periodontal microsurgery in 2015, CBCT in 2017 and establishment of an Advanced Dental Science Department in 2017. We are the pioneers in Kerala to introduce Laser and Implantology certificate courses for our students and faculties.

To facilitate a timely and efficient treatment services directly from the specialists, we introduced Priority Clinic in 2018, which is utilized by our patient community. With the excellent ICT technology, PMS was the first dental college to initiate online classes in Kerala during the pandemic era.

Simultaneously we initiated a new intervention in teaching leaning policy of the institution by switching over to student centric small group teaching. The quality in governance and administration was enhanced with the introduction of various designations such as Directors, Assistant Directors and Associate Deans for stratified and streamlined administration. Accordingly the infrastructural up-gradation was done in 2018 with cafeteria model smart classrooms to facilitate small group discussions and learning system. Furthermore to train our students in comprehensive diagnosis and treatment we introduced Comprehensive Clinic System in 2019, which opened the window for individual and focused training for
the clinical students. Indigenously formulated Activity Based Learning (ABLE) system introduced in 2021 was a quality drive to introduced skill and competency-based education in PMS College of Dental Science and Research. Furthermore, establishment of Dental Education Technology Department in 2021, facilitates faculty enrichment and empowerment.

PMS College of Dental science and research is the first dental college in Kerala to achieve the prestigious. A grade with CGPA of 3.10 by National Accreditation and Assessment Council, in second cycle of accreditation in 2022. Moreover in 2022, PMS was featured 35th among the top dental colleges in India Today survey. As a quality culture, we consistently participate in AISHE, NIRF, KIRF, INDIA Today, Week ranking. Great emphasis is laid on timely submission of AQAR, auditing and conducting various quality related seminars under the guidance of a pro-active IQAC.

Installation of CSSD, implementation of infection control policies and NABH accreditation are add-ons to our quality culture in patient management and clinics.

PMS College of Dental Science and Research is also a recognized PhD center by Kerala University of Health Science since 2021. Till date six departments are recognized with 16 PhD Scholars perusing their doctoral studies. The establishment of Central Research Laboratory and the Institutional Review Board along with Institutional Ethics Committee brings in quality research achievements. Institution is also accredited with DSIR-SIRO certification in 2023, which is the first among dental colleges in Kerala to have this achievement.

The MoUs signed with various institutions and organizations are a stepping-stone towards unconditional growth and quality sustenance. PMS Dental College always extends its forefronts by becoming the knowledge partner and academic partner for various national and international conferences. The institution always excels in its outreach and extension programs as a part of social commitment and reaching out to the underprivileged communities of the society and tribal areas of the state by means of its Satellite centers and various camps.

Another milestone in the journey of PMS Dental College is the commencement of three Para-dental Diploma courses namely Dental mechanics, Dental Hygienist and Dental Operating Room Assistant, with the approval from Health and Family Welfare, Govt. of Kerala.

We are always concern with the environmental harmony and biodiversity conservation within our campus and surrounding locality. Our students and faculties are trained in environment preservation & sustenance mechanisms. Miyawaki forests, Biofloc Aquaculture, organic farming and vegetable garden, herbal garden and buggy service inside the campus as an initiative of the institutional Nature club – Club Green Guardians. The maintenance of the lush green environment along with carbon neutrality is the target for upcoming years.

PMS Dental College is the first dental college in Kerala to receive Green Audit Certification from Nature Green Guardian Foundation , Kerala. This encompasses Environment Quality Certification, Energy Audit Certification & Biodiversity- Green Audit Certification.

Grabbing more funded projects & achieving more quality research and its outcomes are our long term challenges and quality enhancement proposals. Acquiring autonomy, introducing more interdisciplinary programs & courses and delivering international standard of education and research and to emerge as an Institution of National Eminence and international repute are our targets.

As a vision-driven institution, we prioritize maintaining the highest quality standards in all aspects of operations. Our commitment to quality is reflected in a robust system of ranking, assessment, and continuous improvement, ensuring excellence in education, patient care, and treatment services. Feedback is systematically collected and analyzed by the Institutional Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IIQAC) to implement improvements.

Achievements In the year 2023-24:

Recognized under Section 2(f) of the UGC Act, 1956, in the academic year 2024, our institution continues to demonstrate academic excellence. The consistent improvement in NIRF scores and timely AQAR submissions highlight our strong quality culture.

We provide specialized clinical training to outgoing students through rotations in various clinics, including Tobacco Cessation, Divyanjan, Aesthetic, TMJ, Geriatric, Implant, Laser, and Oral Hygiene Clinics. The newly launched Max Care Clinic further enhances student learning by offering expedited patient appointments.

In research, the institution has upgraded its Central Research Laboratory. We had received funding from Department of Science & Technology, Government of India under Fund for Improvement of S&T Infrastructure in Universities and Higher Educational Institutions (FIST), K-DISC, Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment, and received 17 ICMR STS projects.

Our SUSMERAM extension initiative promotes oral health awareness and screens for health issues in Vembayam Panchayat, reflecting our ongoing commitment to societal service and public health improvement.

  • Biofloc Aquaculture

PMS has an unique aquaculture system maintained in three big tanks each having almost 6000 ltr capacity totaling up to 18,000 ltrs. A total of 3000 spawn of tilapia fish species namely Chitralada and Gift are grown in regulated environment. This is created by adding sand, jiggery, ammonium sulfate and yeast to collected well water, along with ample aeration to keep the fish oxygenated. Potassium permanganate, anti-fungal agent etc. are added to counter fungal attack, and prevent infection and death. The spawn is introduced to this aqua medium and monitored rigorously until they are full grown. The fish reared in this are supplied to the college mess for the benefit of students and staff at large. An average catch will yield 200-300Kgs of fish every 6 months. This’s wholly dependent on the health of the fish and the highly fluctuant local factors including infections and all minute parameters of the aqua medium. These fish are free of antibiotics or any other preservative chemicals ensuring students and staff a healthy fresh water fish food option especially in these times when fish and meat products come adulterated. This is a perfect example of self-sustenance adding to our organic vegetable and honey products procured from the campus.

  • Green Audit
  • Environment Quality Certificate

PMS has the unique distinction of being the first Green Audited dental college of Kerala given by Nature’s Green Guardians foundation. The college set in sylvan settings has stringent green ‘laws’ aimed at reducing the carbon footprint, and the varied flora around demanded a green audit to confirm the pledge. The campus boasts of exotic palms, that has caught media attention too, which is otherwise rare in Kerala settings.

 The audit methodology did combine physical inspection of the campus on several work days and holidays, with analytical reviews of relevant documents and activities, as well as interviews with the designated Staff  and Students of the College. To quote the report, “The campus is maintained litter free, clean, and green. Environmental Quality in the campus is seen to be ‘superior’ to many other institutions of the same size.”

Audit findings indicate that, of the 703.8 T CO2 of carbon footprint of the institution for the year, the contribution from transportation and mobility including public transport use is at 317.7 T CO2 with 219.5 T coming from the use of personal vehicles by staff and students, and that out of wastes is at 73.s T CO2. But, remedial activities contributed a relief of 97.8 T CO2.

  • Energy Audit Certificate

Nature’s Green Guardlans Foundation has given this certificate as part of the Green Audit survey. To quote the audit findings; “Audit findings indicate that, of the 703.8 T CO2 of carbon footprint of the institution for the year, the contribution from direct use of energy was limited to 286.9 T CO2. Transportation including public transport use (outside the campus) is at 317.7 T CO2 – with 219.5 T CO2 coming from the use of personal vehicles by staff and students. Wastes contributed 73.5 T CO2, but wastes to energy returned 29.9 T CO2 (remedial measures). Effective awareness and training programs were conducted during the year and are planned for the future as well, to make all stakeholders aware of the need for individual efforts.”

  • Biodiversity – Green Audit Certificate

This certificate too is part of the Green Audit survey. Green Audit  has found that the institution’s per capita carbon footprint for the year is only 0.45 ton of CO2 equivalent, a level well below the current national per capita average of 1.84 t CO2, with potential to develop into a carbon neutral campus. A11 efforts are taken to conserve, protect, and enrich the existing biodiversity and also to extend efforts even beyond the college boundary through outreach, and further by implementing the Green Protocol, and having a commitment to continue its green practices to positively impact the society at large.

  • Buggy service for patients

A battery operated buggy service is recently introduced for the benefit of out patients who commute using public services and auto rickshaws. This service is extended to students too. The buggy is estimated to reduce nearly 98T CO2 per annum. This is a major step towards carbon neutrality that the college is aiming to achieve in the next 5 years.
